A Spark of Community, Creativity & Handmade Jewellery
Discover how a new local artisan space is changing the game for small makers—and what it means for Mayaani Jewellery.
A New Artisan Space Rooted in Community Spirit
There’s something truly magical happening in my local town: a brand-new community interest artisan space has opened—and it’s all run by volunteers! While the entire town might not be in a frenzy, I certainly am.
This isn’t just a shop. It’s a celebration of handmade products, local creativity, and conscious community living. And I’m proud to share that a small selection of Mayaani Jewellery (mostly earrings for now!) is available for purchase there.
Why This Handmade Artisan Shop Matters
Each artisan in the space commits to volunteering one day every two weeks and contributes a small monthly fee. It’s a minimal cost for something so meaningful.
What makes this shop special? The intention behind it.

It was founded with the goal of:
- Supporting local creatives
- Promoting sustainable shopping practices
- Creating a non-competitive, curated space that honours each artisan’s unique style
The founders wrote a beautiful blog post capturing their vision—it's a must-read for anyone passionate about ethical retail and creative entrepreneurship. [Read the blog post here]
Now if you're thinking "that all sounds beautiful....but how is this kind of model really meant to thrive in today's world?" - you're not alone. After all, aren't crafts often seen as a dying relic of the past? Too slow, too niche, too undervalued in a society that thrives on speed and mass production?
But perhaps that's exactly why craft matters more than ever.
This highly insightful article by the British Museum explores the enduring relevance of craft today - highlighting how handmade practices carry cultural memory, create connection, and offer s meaningful alternative to fast consumption. [Read the article here]
If you'd like to see how I channel this love for craftsmanship into my own jewellery, I'd be honoured to welcome you to the Mayaani Jewellery collection. Where every piece is made with intention, story, and soul.
My First Day as a Volunteer (and Why It Didn’t Feel Like Work!)
I’ve just completed my first half-day shift as a volunteer artisan—and it was genuinely joyful. The shop was buzzing with curious visitors, meaningful conversations, and so much admiration for handmade craftsmanship.
Everything—from chatting with customers to recording each sale in a traditional paper book—felt like stepping into a slower, more intentional world. And when we ran out of paper bags? Most customers were delighted. “People have bags,” they said—a heart-warming reminder that sustainability is becoming second nature in our community.
A New Earring Collection Inspired by Family
Creativity often begins at home. My latest inspiration came from a special pair of earrings I made for my masi (maternal aunt). She adored them—and apparently, she’s not the only one. These earrings are already gaining popularity!

I’m now working on a small curated earring collection, inspired by that original pair. These designs will be available soon on my website and in the artisan shop. Stay tuned—you might find your next favourite pair.
What’s New at Mayaani Jewellery
As part of my creative and business growth, I’ve made two new commitments:

Behind the Scenes: Recent Commission Piece Reveal
No Mayaani update would be complete without a little sparkle.
Here are a few photos of a recent custom jewellery commission I worked on—each detail was a joy to bring to life.
